Wes was on a mission. And when the boy was on a mission, there was no stopping him. His missions usually involved the Warblers, and this time was no different. He strode into the music store with David behind him. They had been best friends ever since Wes had moved to Ohio and they were in boy scouts together. The two of them were always hanging out together. Even their girlfriends were best friends with each other, so that made double dating really easy. They didn't do this all the time of course. They were both teenage boys after all and there were some things that Wes just didn't want to see David and Lucy doing.
They were both still wearing their uniforms as they had come to the store right after Warbler's rehearsal. The two boys were both on the Warbler council, and it was part of their job to pick the songs and the arrangements for the acapella group. They had discussed a few ideas, but that had mostly been David trying to convince Wes that they should sing N'SYNC. Wes never understood why the boy he supposedly called his best friend liked the group so much. David had loved them ever since the 'fateful day' when he first heard them on the radio when he was shopping with his mom. He had been trying to convince Wes about how 'amazing their dancing is' and how 'awesome their harmonies are' ever since.
The Warblers were performing in the Summer Spectacular show choir competition in California. And so, it was up to them to find some music that they were going to sing. And it had to be good. They had tied during Sectionals and came in last place at Regionals. The Warblers needed to win this competition. The group had been going to this competition for the past few years and had even won it a once or twice (he would have to ask David what the exact number was - he was the Historian for a reason). This year, the Warblers were going to win it again.
"So, I was thinking we should do something popular that everyone's going to recognize and would showcase our harmonies. How about some Beach Boys?" he asked as he picked up the Best of the Beach Boys album. They had to have something that the Warblers could do...

David walked into the store behind Wes, still humming the N'SYNC song he last suggested to him. He thought "It's Gonna be Me" was the perfect song to sing for a competition. Because it was obvious that the Warblers would win. And this song would be the topping on the cake. But in the end Wes had the final say.
The Summer Spectacular in California was a great opportunity to show off his awesome dance moves, and maybe Jeff's too. He had already choreographed all of "It's Gonna be Me" but it looked like that was done in vain. Wes would have none of it. He didn't know why Wes hated N'SYNC so much. David shrugged to himself.
He was brought out of his musings by Wes asking him a question. "So, I was thinking we should do something popular that everyone's going to recognize and would showcase our harmonies. How about some Beach Boys?" he had said. David pondered this for all of about five seconds.
"Well, I suppose we could do Beach Boys. But you know who also has harmonies that would show us off? N'SYNC!" With that David proceeded to start singing "It's Gonna be Me." Maybe if Wes heard it, he would realize how amazing of a song it was and decide to do it for the competition.

"Well, I suppose we could do Beach Boys. But you know who also has harmonies that would show us off? N'SYNC!"
Wes quirked his eyebrow and gave his fellow warbler a 'Really? Really?' look as David started singing said song. He really didn't need to do that. Wes knew the song. He hung out with David all the time, so thus, he heard the song all the time. Seriously, he could just say the name of the song and be done with it.
The Warbler president shook his head and sighed. "And why do I choose to call you my best friend again?" Wes asked, smirking a little. He was joking of course, they often joked about why they were friends along with Blaine as well. The only reason the other warbler wasn't here right now was because he had rushed out the door right after rehearsal to drive to Lima to see Kurt. Wes loved both of the boys like they were brothers, but it was downright annoying when they texted each other all the time and Blaine had been constantly looking at his phone to check the time for when rehearsal got out. He really needed to take that phone away from him. But they Kurt would start to worry that something was wrong. And they thought them staring across the room from each other was annoying. And they hadn't even been together yet at that point.
"We're already a boys acapella group. Don't you think doing a song by a group like N'SYNC would be kind of expected?" he asked with a chuckle as he flipped through a few albums.

"We're already a boys acapella group. Don't you think doing a song by a group like N'SYNC would be kind of expected?"
"That's the beauty of it," David said with a smile. "Give the people what they want!" He could tell his words were now falling on deaf ears as Wes flipped through the albums. He gave a soft chuckle. Next time he knew that he would win and Wes would finally agree to N'SYNC. Now however it was time to seriously look and decide what to sing.
As he flipped he saw Katy Perry's new album and cringed. How could Blaine stand listening to her music. In fact it was partly (or fully) Blaine's fault that David was now pushing as hard as he was for N'SYNC. If the Warblers could do Blaine's favorite singer, why not David's? It wasn't very fair if you asked him. He ended up picking up the discarded Beach Boys album and looked at the back of it. "Hmm...interesting song titles. 'Surfin' USA...California Girls...Good Vibrations'... Hey Wes, maybe we should think about the Beach Boys for this competition." They did have good harmonies after all. They weren't as great as N'SYNC, but they were good.

It was summer again. To most kids, this meant hanging out with their friends, going swimming and camping and avoiding their summer reading until the last moment. But for Rachel, summer meant auditioning, and rehearsing and preparing for her inevitable stardom on Broadway someday. She would audition for community theatres in Lima and the surrounding area to gain more experience. She needed as much as she could get.
Rachel had countless songs to choose from for auditions that would show off her talents. She had a collection of binders at home that held her selections of her favorites. But, she was always looking for another song to sing that would give her an even bigger advantage at an audition. The music stores in Lima had an okay music selection, but what this diva needed was an amazing selection. Which was why she was here, in Westerville. She was sure to find something here.
She had barely begun to look when she overheard, "...maybe we should think about the Beach Boys for this competition."
At the sound of the word 'competition,' Rachel turned and saw two boys, looking through albums. It was obvious that they were both from Dalton Academy because they were both wearing the navy blazers with red piping that Rachel had seen Kurt, Blaine and the Warblers wear - wait! That was why they were familiar! These two were both members of the Warblers!
"Competition? What competition are you guys talking about?" she asked, walking over to the boys. "I couldn't help but overhear. I'm Rachel Berry, from New Directions. You guys are two of the Warblers right?" Rachel couldn't resist a competition. And if there was one that the Warblers were going to that she didn't know about, she wanted to know.

"That's the beauty of it, Give the people what they want!"
Wes chuckled a little at his friend. He really wasn't going to let this N'SYNC thing go was he? Maybe the Warblers could perform a song of theirs for one of their 'impromptu performances' or something. He wondered what Thad's opinion was on the band. The other warbler did have a say in song selection after all..."And where can I find these so called people? Maybe they can help with our song selection from now on," he replied, smiling as he scanned over a Bruno Mars album.
"Hmm...interesting song titles. 'Surfin' USA...California Girls...Good Vibrations'... Hey Wes, maybe we should think about the Beach Boys for this competition."
"That's a great idea David. I wish I would have thought of it myself," he said sarcastically, before smirking a little. "They are the perfect fit for the summer. And we are going to be on the beach. I think their vocals would fit with our harmonies really well. We will have to see what Thad thinks when we get back to school."
"Competition? What competition are you guys talking about? I couldn't help but overhear. I'm Rachel Berry, from New Directions. You guys are two of the Warblers right?"
A short girl with a loud voice came over to them. Wes thought she had looked familiar, and then she introduced herself and he remembered where he knew her from. Of course he knew about Rachel Berry. He had heard stories from Kurt about her and wasn't she the girl that Blaine had kissed at a party that year? There had certainly been some serious drama with Klaine over that since Blaine was one of his best friends after all. But most importantly, he knew her from Regionals. Where she had sang a solo and had another solo in the group number. Even with hearing about all the stories about how annoying the girl was, one thing was for sure, she could seriously sing.
"Yes, we are. I'm Wes Montgomery, the President of the Warblers. We're going to the Summer Spectacular competition in California this year. We've been going for the past couple of years. It's a good way to get more experience," he answered the girl. Sure, Wes didn't have to answer Rachel at all, but he liked a little competition. And plus, if New Directions did end up going to this competition, it would give the Warblers another chance to beat them...

David had opened his mouth to answer his best friend, when he was interrupted by a short brunette with a very loud voice. David turned and looked at her. She looked familiar. He knew who she was as soon as she said her name. Of course it was Rachel Berry. The amazing singer from New Directions. It was her song that pushed them over the top and caused them to beat the Warblers at Regionals. Also, both he and Wes had heard enough about her from Kurt (and Blaine) to know who she was.
She was a fabulous singer. Maybe she would recognize the genius of N'SYNC. David pulled his head away from those thoughts. Now wasn't the time. Wes had just told Rachel about the competition. Was it his imagination, or did her eyes light up at the mention of it? He knew Wes would tell her, of course. He loved competition. And this could be a sort of rematch between the Warblers and New Directions.
David smiled at Rachel. "And I'm David Thompson. It's a great opportunity to perform for people that haven't seen you before. Show them what Ohio is made of." He chuckled a little. Plus having New Directions had more than one advantage. They'd get the competition and rematch they wanted. And they also wouldn't have to listen to Blaine whine about how much he missed Kurt. That is, if they couldn't find a way to get Kurt there anyway.

"Yes, we are. I'm Wes Montgomery, the President of the Warblers. We're going to the Summer Spectacular competition in California this year. We've been going for the past couple of years. It's a good way to get more experience,"
"And I'm David Thompson. It's a great opportunity to perform for people that haven't seen you before. Show them what Ohio is made of."
Rachel's eyes widened a bit as she tilted her head, pondering this new information. There was a competition the Warblers were going to that New Directions was not? How had she never heard about this competition? And it was in California? She had never been there before. Of course, the first time she had ever been out of state was when they had flown to New York for Nationals.
"Oh I totally agree. I've been performing since I was three months old. The more experience the better. So, can anyone enter this? I mean, it is a little short notice. I don't even know if we would have enough time to raise the money, but I'm sure we can think of something!" she said excitedly, already brainstorming ideas. New Directions was going to win Nationals next year, and in order to do that, they had to get all the experience that they could get.

Wes blinked at the girl as she just talked. And talked. She really liked to hear the sound of her own voice didn't she? And performing since she was three months old? Seriously? Was that even possible? He sighed as he listened to the girl.
"Yes, I believe any show choir can enter. A lot of choirs don't compete in the competition because it's the summer time and they don't want to devote the time to rehearsals." he shrugged as he glanced at Adele and Coldplay albums. Warbler song selection was very important.

David listened as Rachel talked. Then she kept talking. Then she talked some more. Man, the girl could talk. She must have had some major lungs. That would explain why she had an amazing voice.
"Yes, I believe any show choir can enter. A lot of choirs don't compete in the competition because it's the summer time and they don't want to devote the time to rehearsals." David watched as Wes went back to looking through the albums. Not even paying attention anymore. Man, he could at least give the girl some advice.
David chuckled, "Listen, Rachel, Fundraising is something we Warblers know about." David thought for a moment. "There's a lot of things you could do to raise the money quickly. For instance, the Warblers have given benefit concerts before to raise money. You should think about doing something like that." David thought about the Warblers latest benefit concert. The entire school had come, not to mention the each member of the Warblers parents. It had been a huge success. They raised all of the money they had needed just by doing the concert. It was the best form of fundraising.

Rachel nodded her head at Wes' words. She totally could understand that. Not everyone cared as much about show choir and working to better their voice like she did. It was a little sad that the other choirs didn't want the experience, but that just meant that there was more likely of a chance for New Directions to win this competition. That is, if they wanted to go at least. And why wouldn't they? It seemed perfect. More experience, more people to see how talented they were, more solos to feature herself on, and it was in California, where there was a beach. Who wouldn't want to go to this competition?
"Listen, Rachel, Fundraising is something we Warblers know about. There's a lot of things you could do to raise the money quickly. For instance, the Warblers have given benefit concerts before to raise money. You should think about doing something like that."
"That's a really great idea. And I know New Directions has the talent to pull something like that off, but we tried that when we were raising money to go to New York, and the only people that showed up were Kurt, Blaine and a few hecklers. The soloist from Carmel High's Vocal Adrenaline was supposed to sing and bring in a ton of people, but she was forced to pull out of the show and she took all of her followers with her. So, I don't know if they would go for that idea. I think we would need a way to pull in more people for that to work," she said with a sigh.
Even after placing 12th at Nationals, New Directions were still at the bottom of the school and the losers. Which was ridiculous. They were 12th place in the entire nation! That had to mean something right? But no. No one hardly even payed any attention to that besides the glee kids. Who would want to come watch them perform?

David started slightly. Rachel barely even took a breath during that whole speech. Just then something she said registered in his head. "Wait," he said. "Are you saying that you only had 2 people there to see you guys. And the others just made fun of you the whole time?" This was something David couldn't understand. The Warblers always had plenty of fans at their concerts. In fact most of the time they sold out.
David remembered his first ever Warbler performance. He and Wes were just freshmen. When he walked out onto the stage with the other Warblers, he was almost scared by how many people were in the audience. As soon as he started singing, though, he got more confident. And he got really confident when the entire audience erupted into applause. He had quickly found his parents in the crowd. They were standing with the rest of the audience, smiles on their faces. They were so proud of him. "Didn't your parents even come? When the Warblers give a concert all of our parents come. Not only that, but the whole school shows up."

And Wes thought she had talked a lot before. That speech was nothing compared to the one she had just rambled off. But what she had said made him frown a little in confusion. Why had so few people come to their performance? The only people that had supported them were Kurt and Blaine? They had to have other people that would come to see them. He was sure the majority of the Warblers would have come if they had been invited. The two groups had met a few times throughout the year and they all seemed to get along pretty well. Even if Wes constantly was wondering how they managed to run a rehearsal and get anything accomplished with all the drama that was happening in the group all of the time.
"Wait, Are you saying that you only had 2 people there to see you guys. And the others just made fun of you the whole time? Didn't your parents even come? When the Warblers give a concert all of our parents come. Not only that, but the whole school shows up."
Wes nodded his head at David's response. "It's true. The Warblers are fairly popular. A lot of our girlfriend's go to our sister school and so a lot of those students come as well. We always have a full house," he said, smiling a little, thinking of the supportive applause the Warblers usually received. The acapella group were like family to Wes, and he loved getting the chance to perform with them.

Rachel blinked at the two boys. She was a little surprised, but not a lot. Of course the Warblers were popular. And even if they weren't, they went to Dalton, a school where there was a zero tolerance harassment policy. Which meant no getting eggs thrown at you or being laughed at, and most of all, no slushies thrown in your face. "Sunshine had told us so many of her twitter followers were coming, so we sort of wanted to have more seats for them so our parents wouldn't have to pay more than they had to. I ended up not singing, but I performed the song I would have sang for my dads before hand as sort of a warm up." she said, smiling a little, trying to justify the fact that none of their parents had been there for the benefit.
She wished that more of McKinley would recognize the talent at their school like the Warblers had at Dalton. They even had people from another school going to see them. And Vocal Adrenaline had a ton of fans as well...Wait. New Directions didn't have fans, but the Warblers did. Lot of them. Would they even..? "Performers are always looking for more places to perform. What if New Directions could offer the Warblers a place to do that?Would you guys be interested at all? I mean, I would still have to run it by Mr. Schuester and the rest of the club. They don't even know about the competition yet. But I think it's a great idea. You guys would get more performance experience, and the New Directions can raise money for the competition. Everyone wins right?" she ashed, shifting a little nervously. She wasn't used to asking for help and she hoped that the two boys would at least think about the offer.

David blinked, then furrowed his brow and thought. A place for the Warblers to perform? Well, they could always use more practice. And it might increase the friendship between the two groups. That way, no matter who won, they would all be happy.
David didn't think that the Warblers ever gave a joint performance in the past. He'd have to check the books, but he was pretty sure this would be a first if they decided to do it. But maybe they could set a precedent. Maybe after this the New Directions and the Warblers could do joint concerts more often. If it was successful, that is. This might be a good idea to consider. He looked at his best friend. Rather than voice his opinions right away, he decided to let Wes weigh in. He was the president after all. He might have thought of something that David did not.
"What do you think, Wes?"
