Personality:
At first glance, Sam may seem like your typical football jock that gets all the hot girls and has to be one of the most popular guys in school. He’s got the look down, after all. That’s not quite true, however. He is very nice, but he tends to be just a little self-possessed. He’s also a huge dork, and claims to know the language of Na’vi from the movie “Avatar.” He’s quite oblivious and naïve when it comes to the attention he is given. Sam is very self conscious, having shown signs of body dysmorphic disorder, and he is almost shy to those he isn’t really close with. He keeps things to himself, no matter who you are. He is afraid to let people know the truth about a lot of things, afraid that people will judge him. He’s come to accept that being in Glee club isn’t totally cool, and people judge him for that but he can’t seem to grasp that the people in Glee club care for him and don’t care about all the insecurities he seems to have. He fears social alienation, or being bullied. Sam suffers from Dyslexia, and struggles in mathematics. Although, he also isn’t the brightest bulb, either. He tends to crack some pretty lame jokes every now and then in hopes he’ll get a laugh out of somebody. Sam has shown to be a very honorable and determined person. He doesn’t back out of something when he tells himself he is going to do it, and he does his best to get what he wants.
History:
Before moving to William McKinley, Sam attended an all boys school. This may be a small factor of his self-consciousness or sometimes awkward personality he has. Sam first heard of the Glee club when they performed “Empire State of Mind” on the school grounds during lunch one day. He had been interested in singing, but never thought about taking it seriously until the popular quarterback, Finn Hudson approached him about joining the Glee club. That was when he met Puck, Artie, and Mike and sang “Billionaire” for them.
Sam joined the football team as well, hearing that there was a new coach. With this new coach also came new auditions and after Finn was kicked off of the team for trying to get Artie on it, Sam decides against going to his real Glee club audition because he feared social rejection by those around him. He was new after all, and he didn’t want that to add on to the already “new kid” feeling. That was when Sam also broke the news to Finn that he was the new quarterback.
In McKinley’s first game of the season, Finn had a plan and Sam decided to go with his instead of the Beast’s. Finn’s plan ended up not working out the way they had planned, and it resulted in Sam dislocating his shoulder and giving the quarterback spot back to Finn. Since he could no longer play football, he gave in to joining Glee club. Almost immediately after joining, he is then approached by Kurt Hummel who not only accused him of dying his hair, but also asked him to be his duet partner for Glee club. Sam agrees, despite the accusation. Finn had then tried getting Sam to back out of the duet with Kurt, but Sam refused because he had given Kurt his word. The next day, however, Kurt ends the partnership himself.
After experiencing his first slushie facial, Quinn Fabray helped him clean up. Shortly after, Sam asked Quinn to be her duet partner. That was when Sam plucked up the courage to try and kiss Quinn, but she rejected him. Thankfully, though, she agreed to the duet and they sang “Lucky” by Jason Mraz and Colbie Caillat, winning a free dinner together at Breadstix. At dinner, Sam just made clumsy and awkward attempts at trying to talk to Quinn, which led to questions and Quinn asking Sam if he was gay, which apparently everyone was suspecting. He does reveal that he dyes his hair with lemon juice, and that he attended an all boys school which is why he is so awkward talking to Quinn and other girls. Quinn then pocketed their certificate and insisted Sam should pay to consider this their first official date.
While bonding with Finn in the locker room one day, they discuss their body insecurities. Sam insists he has a strict and healthy diet, but shows signs of having body dysmorphic disorder. If he were to miss a workout and have a hot dog, he would hate himself for a few days. When he was given the part of Eddie in “Rocky Horror,” he kept asking for board shorts instead of the tight trunks they had him wearing. He is later pulled from the role but Mr. Schue insists that it wasn’t for his complaints or his body. Regardless, Sam doesn’t believe him and confides in Finn that he feels fat.
Sam was ready to get Quinn to be his girlfriend. He asked Quinn for some alone time one day, saying he wants to be like the stars with her. He then got down on one knee and showed Quinn a ring. It was a promise ring that assured Quinn that he would never pressure her to do anything but kiss. He tells her he promises to make her feel special and that he really cares about her and wants them to be together. She tells him “maybe.” They then both take the duet in sectionals, singing “I’ve Had the Time Of My Life,” before which Sam tells Quinn she looks beautiful.
After hearing Finn shouting at Quinn one day about quitting Glee club for the Cheerios, Sam got into a fight with Finn. He began to feel a little threatened by the relationship of Finn and Quinn, knowing they dated in the past. Santana helped him realize that Quinn had cheated on him with Finn and then broke up with Quinn to be with Santana.
When the Glee club started writing original songs, Santana wrote a song about Sam titled “Trouty Mouth,” about his own mouth which he was very self-conscious about. He stopped her halfway through the song, angry and embarrassed. This may have caused them to break up, but their breakup wasn’t totally public.
Sam had to turn down Rachel Berry when she asked him out, telling her that she wasn’t his “type.” He was also then suspected to be having an affair with Quinn or Kurt who had been visiting him at an old motel. In reality, his dad had just lost his job and his family had been living in the motel for a while and Kurt was bring him some of his old clothes and Quinn had offered to help babysit his younger brother and sister. Sam was overwhelmed when the other Glee kids found out and all pitched in to buy back his guitar which he was forced to sell.
Sam was invited to prom by Mercedes and Rachel as a friendly three-way date. Rachel ended up spending most of the time with tag-along Jesse St. James. During one slow song, Sam notices Mercedes sitting by herself. He goes up to her, telling her how she looked beautiful and asked her to dance. The two danced together for the remainder of the night. Shortly after, the pair decided to date in secret.
Short rp Sample:
Wearing his old school's yellow and blue letterman jacket did make Sam feel out of place amongst these new kids, a co-ed school in fact, something Sam was not used to. He had managed to find a spot in the courtyard at a table with a few people who were friendly enough to let him join them. He introduced himself and then just kept quiet, silently studying everyone around him in the courtyard. Just before moving to McKinley, Sam had attended an all boys school, so the amount of girls here was a tad bit overwhelming for him. Not that he knew how to talk to girls, though. He could definitely use some practice in that field.
The courtyard was hustling and bustling of a bunch of different groups of cliques, he noticed. There were the band kids whom had out their instruments, fingering through some sheet music. Then there were the kids all dressed in black, wearing heavy makeup. He avoided eye contact. Their was a large group of cheerleaders all sitting together staring down a group of kids on the stairs wearing baggy pants and "NEW YORK" tshirts. Then the kids he happened to be sitting with were what he figured to be a few of the jocks. They were big, quite loud, and all wearing letterman jackets. Sam's eyes glanced back at the group of kids on the stairs, then he turned his head when one of the bigger boys at his table said, "Great, it's the singing freaks."
Sam's head immediately turned back to the group of kids who had began belting out, "ba, ba, ba." Jay-Z's "Empire State of Mind," no doubt. He watched as a boy in a wheelchair wheeled himself around, rapping out the first verse. No doubt he was impressed. The rapping was then handed over to a tall boy, who wasn't bad either. Sam couldn't help but tap his foot to the beat. Why had the jock called them the "singing freaks?" They were fantastic, in Sam's opinion.
Then the girl's chimed in with the chorus and Sam was mind blown. These kids had some serious talent and no one was paying attention to them! The lack of attention didn't seem to phase them as they were singing though, they all just kept on going. Sam was completely impressed by their talents, regardless of whatever the jocks beside him were saying throughout their performance.
