Personality:
Melody is a friendly, outgoing, ambitious girl who is happiest on stage. She is very social and has many friends inside and out of school, but will never be in the "cool crowd" because of her difference in attitude compared to the Cheerios. While the popular kids will do whatever it takes to keep a high social status, Melody couldn't care less as long as she's having fun and staying true to herself.
Although her fashion sense and hatred of sports say otherwise, Mel is quite the tomboy at heart. She never wears much makeup or spends more than 10 minutes on her hair, and she would rather be at home with a guitar than at the mall with a thousand dollars any day. She tends to get along better with boys because they're so laid back compared to girls, and she likes friendship without drama.
History:
Melody was born an only child and lived a happy seven years with her parents in Lima, Ohio. However, Melody's mother soon learned that her husband had been cheating on her with his high school sweetheart, and filed a divorce not long after that. Mel was too young and innocent at the time to realize what was going on, so her mother just said that she wouldn't be allowed to see her daddy anymore and left it at that. It wasn't long before Monica finally told Mel the truth, feeling bad about hiding it from her. It was hard to adapt to a life with only one parent, but Mel pulled through with her friends and karaoke machine to distract her.
It was during those times that Melody really discovered her love for music. She had always played with her karaoke machine before, but now it was...different. If she sang all of her feelings, her problems didn't seem so bad anymore. And whenever she sang, she would see the big smile on her mom's face. So she kept practicing, not just for herself, but for her mother as well. It soon became a habit to sing for at least a half hour each day after school.
On Melody's ninth birthday, she got a very special present...a new daddy. It turned out that Mel's mom and this man, Hibiki Niwa, met through a mutual friend and had been dating for about a year. Hibiki then proposed to Monica. Although Mel was a bit upset that she hadn't met Hibiki before the engagement, it didn't matter; the soon-to-be daddy and daughter instantly liked each other. A few months later, the wedding happened and a new family was created. Melody got a new stepdad as well as a stepsister; Mitsuko Niwa, who was twelve at the time. After the marriage, Monica decided to change Melody's last name from Rukin to Niwa; she wanted no evidence of her previous marriage. Three years later, Melody found herself with another family member; a baby half-sister named Micaiah, the first biological child of Monica and Hibiki.
Soon, Melody started high school, and with the transition she got another gift; her very first guitar. She had been singing for so many years now, it was time to take her musical journey to a new level. She sang and played nonstop at home, and when the auditions came up for the drama club she auditioned, no questions asked. She kept growing in the drama program. Soon the renewed glee club was holding auditions as well, but Melody was too busy with drama to join another performance club. She did, however, meet Rachel Berry during the Cabaret production. She found Rachel annoying and a bit arrogant, but the girls shared their ambition and love for performing, and became friends that way. Rachel had been kind enough to invite her to audition for the glee club, but when Mel had to turn the offer down, Rachel seemed almost relieved. She probably didn't want any competition.
But now it's summer, and the possibilities are endless. All Mel knows is that once school starts again, she WILL audition for New Directions...and get in, too!

The echo of the final note of the final lyric rung in the air as the sound of a strumming guitar came to an abrupt stop. The applause started, mostly claps but the sound of whooping and cheering was evident. Melody opened her eyes and grinned ear to ear, letting the sound sink in. This wasn't the first, nor would it be the last time she would get an applause like that.
Ever since school let out and there were no clubs to perform in, Mel had been going around town, signing up for every talent show and coffee house she could find. So far, she was having an awesome time and she was getting a great response. Yep, this was the life. If I can sing for the rest of my life, I'll be happy. she decided as she bowed and ran off stage. She looked down as she realized she was getting a text. She read it quickly and her face instantly lightened up even more. "Ooh, gotta get home! Dad's making sushi~" she muttered to herself and left quickly. After all this time, she could never get enough of her stepfather's cooking.
