Personality:
On the surface, Kurt may seem like your average overly homosexual teenage boy. This is not the case, however. Kurt is openly gay, and everyone knows it, but not because he pushes it in their faces. He does not. Kurt is simply himself, although he does have an “I'm better than you are” kind of attitude. He's a true Diva. He wears what he likes. He loves fashion. He often talks with Mercedes, his best friend about their outfits of choice. Kurt is slightly spoiled as he is the only son of a single father. Kurt is very sensitive and tends to push people away if something bad is happening to him or someone he loves. He tries to deal with it on his own and rarely asks for help. He will accept it when he gets desperate though. He let in a boy, Blaine, and has gathered a lot of courage from him and from his father and step-mother. He is more able to express himself, even at Mckinley. Kurt always helps out his friends if they need help, just like they help him if he needs it.
History:
Kurt's life was good. He had a wonderful father and mother. However tragedy struck. Kurt's mother passed away. He was very close to his mother and took the death very hard. Since then his father had been trying to fill the gap by being both father and mother. Kurt loves his father and loves him for trying. Burt Hummel would even have tea parties with him. Even now it is clear that Kurt is gay. And it is clear that he has a rough road ahead of him.
Kurt begins his sophomore year of high school by constantly getting bullied and tossed into dumpsters. It is clear that he is gay, but he is hiding it. He auditions for Glee Club by singing “Mr. Cellophane.” He fixes his hair while holding out a long high note, showing that it's no big deal. He develops a friendship with most people in New Directions, except for maybe Rachel Berry. Mercedes Jones quickly becomes his best friend. However, Mercedes has something else in mind. Mercedes develops a crush on Kurt. When she confesses her feelings Kurt says that he's in love with someone else. Mercedes mistakenly thinks it's Rachel. Kurt, being too scared to admit that he's gay, says that it is Rachel, but he's actually in love with Finn. She throws a rock through his windshield. Eventually, Mercedes is the first person that Kurt confides in. He admits it and Mercedes wonders why he didn't just tell her. Kurt is too scared to come out and only wants Mercedes to know. She accepts him and gives him courage. Later his dad catches him dancing the “Singles Ladies” dance in his basement room with Brittany and Tina. Kurt is wearing an all black leotard and dancing just as well as the ladies. His dad asks about it. He says that all the guys wear them to work out. Tina and Brittany help him lie to his father. Eventually the story is that Kurt is the kicker on the football team and that dancing helps with coordination and even the big time players dance. His dad seems to buy it, but wants tickets to his first game. This poses a problem for Kurt. He goes to “audition” for the football team. With Finn's help, he gets to try out. He does the Single Ladies dance as he goes for the kick, and he makes it. Leading up to the game, Mr. Schue and Coach Tenaka teach the boys of the football team to dance. The perform the dance at the first game of the season. Kurt does a solo dance and kick to score the winning point. Burt goes into Kurt's room after the game and catches Kurt in the middle of his skin care. Kurt says that it's part of his ritual, but eventually he gathers his courage and comes out to his father. His father accepts him and says that he already knew and is proud of him no matter what.
Kurt is tired of not being able to get the solos he wants because he's a boy. Mr. Schue announces that “Defying Gravity” is in the running for them to perform at Sectionals. He is about to give the song to Rachel, but Kurt protests. After much deliberation, and a visit from Burt, they decide to have a Diva-off. The two students perform the song for the Glee Club. Meanwhile, Burt has been getting harassing phone calls from unknown people about Kurt and his sexuality. Kurt messes up the high F on purpose (he is able to sing it with ease). He doesn't want his father to get messages like that because of him. He lets Rachel get the solo. Burt doesn't like that he did that, but is touched and says he's strong like his mother. Mr. Schuester decides to teach the kids about ballads. He pairs them up. Kurt gets paired with Finn. Finn is not thrilled to be partnered with a boy. But Kurt decides to try to seduce him by helping him with his problems. Kurt sings “I Honestly Love You” to Finn, but Finn doesn't get that he means it literally to him. Kurt seems to like Finn so much that he convinces Rachel to dress more sultry and sexy, like Sandy at the end of Grease in order to win Finn's affections. It backfires as Kurt intends. Rachel confronts Kurt and he confesses that he also has feelings for Finn. They both know that with Quinn in the picture, neither of them have a chance with Finn. But even without Quinn, Rachel has more of a shot with him, because Finn is not gay.
Sectionals come and the club is shocked when their entire set list has been stolen by the other clubs. The group struggles as they try and come up with new songs. In the end, they succeed and win Sectionals. The Glee club returns to school believing that their social status will have risen. However their dreams are dashed as Kurt, Mercedes, and Rachel are slushied. The kids are soon told to sing songs by Madonna. Kurt is very excited, along with the girls. He and Mercedes do a multi-media project and recruit Sue Sylvester and her cheerios to be in it, after seeing Will insult Sue's hair. Sue later recruits the two to become members of the Cheerios. They reveal their involvement in the group to the rest of the glee club by performing Madonna's “4 Minutes” at a pep rally. Kurt continues to try and get close to Finn by setting up their parents. Kurt arranges for Burt to meet Carole Hudson at Parent/Teacher night. The pair instantly hit it off and they begin dating. Finn does not like it though. Kurt arranges a family night, but his plan backfires when Burt and Finn begin bonding over sports. That night, Burt talks to Kurt and it seems he's aware of Kurt's feelings for Finn. Finn eventually accepts his mother's relationship and bonds even more with Burt. Kurt is not happy with this and ends up watching them from afar, crying. Possibly because of all this, Kurt takes out some of his feelings on Mercedes, telling her she should lose weight so she can remain on the Cheerios. At another pep rally, Mercedes sings “Beautiful” and Kurt realizes what he had been doing to her. He apologizes.
Soon, a “Glist” comes out, naming the hottest members of the glee club. Kurt, along with Mercedes, Artie, and Tina, are not on the list. They perform “U Can't Touch This” in the library along with Brittany. But the plan backfires as the librarian loves their performance. Kurt steals a video that Sue made using the song “Physical.” When he admits to it, he hopes that his reputation will get better, but it doesn't. Kurt can't accept Finn and Burt bonding, so he decides to act straight in order to gain his father's affections. He performs a song for Glee Club, but everyone can tell that this is not the real Kurt. Everyone accept Brittany, who convinces Kurt to make out with her. Kurt makes sure that his father catches him and Brittany making out, and while Burt “believes” him, he encourages Kurt to be who he truly is. Finally, Kurt sees that acting straight isn't helping his relationship with his father, so he reverts back to his true personality. Burt invites Carole and Finn to move in with him and Kurt. Kurt is thrilled, but Finn is not. Kurt redecorates, but Finn loses it and calls it “Faggy.” Burt over hears this and throws Finn out of the house. Finn attempts to make it up to Kurt and eventually saves Kurt from bullies while wearing his Lady Gaga costume. Kurt leads the Cheerios to a 6th National Championship by singing Celine Dion songs in French. Finally it is time for Regionals. The group is distraught that Sue is one of the judges, however they press on and sing a selection of Journey songs. The audience loves them. However they only got third place. This means that Glee club would be disbanded after this year. Kurt and the rest of the club sings “To Sir, With Love” to Mr. Schue. Sue watches the performance and is touched. She petitions to Principal Figgins to give glee club another year.
Kurt's Junior year begins with him getting a slushie facial. To his dismay his reputation has not gone up any. Kurt and some other members of the glee club wanted to do Britney Spears songs. Kurt was the most insistent about it. Finally Mr. Schue agrees as long as he can sing with the kids. The assembly turns into a “Britney Spears Sex Riot.” Kurt is worried about his father's health, so he ends up bringing him a healthy breakfast. They have an argument about family dinner night. Kurt walks out saying he won't be attending because there is a Sound of Music singalong that night. While as school, Kurt gets word that his father has had a heart attack. He is rushed to the hospital to see him. Kurt rejects all help that is offered to him. He only accepts Finn's help because Finn points out that they are family and Burt is the only thing he's ever had that's close to a father. New Directions tries to help Kurt by praying and singing songs to Burt in his hospital bed, but Kurt throws them out. It is only after Kurt's emotions are set free in front of the entire glee club as he sings “I Want to Hold your Hand” that he accepts help. He goes to church with Mercedes and lets people pray for him.
Glee gets a new member named Sam Evans, and Kurt believes Sam to be gay, because he dyes his hair. Kurt invites Sam to sing a duet with him and he agrees. Finn begs Kurt not to sing with him and Burt agrees with Finn. Eventually, Kurt breaks off the duet with Sam, letting him sing with someone else. Kurt sings “Le Jazz Hot” saying that it's a duet because it expresses both the masculine and feminine psyche within a person. Rachel and Kurt have a good heart to heart and discover they are not as different as they appear and they decide to sing a duet. When the club decides to perform the Rocky Horror Show, Mr. Schue wants to cast Kurt as Dr. Frank-N-Furter. However, Kurt refuses the part and says he wants to be Riff-Raff. He was sure that no one could play that part like him, and he was right. Kurt is being bullied more and more, especially by David Karofsky. He's being pushed against lockers for no reason. Kurt finally speaks up, and Karofsky threatens to pummel him. A friendly competition amongst the glee kids does nothing to ease Kurt's mind and spirit. The boys insult him when he offers suggestions for their competition against the girls. They suggest he go to Dalton and spy on their glee club. So, Kurt does. He goes to Dalton and meets Blaine Anderson. Blaine mistakes him for a new student and runs with him to Warbler Hall for the performance of the Warblers, the schools glee club. He informs Kurt that the Warblers are like rock stars. Kurt watches and Blaine and the Warblers perform “Teenage Dream.” Kurt is obviously already falling in love with Blaine, the lead singer. After the performance, Kurt sits down with Blaine, and two other Warblers, Wes and David. They talk about Kurt and why he's there. Then Kurt and Blaine talk about the bullying problem. Blaine confesses that he is gay and had a bullying problem. That is why he went to Dalton, which has a no bullying policy. Blaine gives Kurt courage. The next time Karofsky pushes Kurt into a locker, he follows him and they confront each other. Karofsky ends up kissing Kurt. Kurt pushes him away, shocked and disgusted. Blaine helps Kurt confront Karofsky about being gay, but Karofsky denies it ever happened and threatens them both. After the confrontation, Kurt hangs a picture of Blaine in his locker, with the word “courage” underneath. Soon, Kurt stops hanging out with Mercedes and starts spending more and more time with Blaine. But finally the three go out to dinner at Breadstix. Kurt and Blaine leave Mercedes in the dust with their discussion. Karofsky confronts Kurt at school and asks if he has told anyone. He says that if he ever does that he will kill him. A joyous occasion then happens in Kurt's life. His father and Carole have decided to get married. Kurt becomes their wedding planner. Kurt is still scared at school, and Sue expels Karofsky because of the threat made against Kurt's life. Burt and Carole have a glee wedding, dancing down the aisle while New Directions sings “Marry You.” At the reception, Finn sings “Just the Way You Are” to Kurt and swears that he has his back from now on. Karofsky returns to school, his expulsion being overridden by the school board, and Burt and Carole decide to use their money saved for their honeymoon, to transfer Kurt to Dalton Academy.
Kurt joins the Dalton Academy Warlbers, and has to take care of Pavarotti, the clubs canary as a condition of joining. Kurt offers up a suggestion for the Warblers to sing at Sectionals, but it is declined. Blaine, however, invites Kurt to audition for a solo. Kurt sings “Don't Cry for me Argentina,” but does not get the solo. He's having a hard time adjusting to this new glee club. At Sectionals, Kurt and Rachel have another heart to heart and become closer friends. During the performance Rachel reminds Kurt to smile. In the end the clubs tie for first and they will both be competing at Regionals.
Kurt has some troubles academically at Dalton, as well as getting used to the Warblers. Blaine interrupts his studying and asks him to help him practice. The pair sing “Baby, It's Cold Outside,” being very flirtatious and ending up very close on the couch. Kurt admits to Mr. Schue that he's practically in love with Blaine, but that they are still just friends. Even though they are just friends, Blaine attends a McKinley High football game with Kurt and the Hudson-Hummels. Kurt is in love with Blaine by Valentine's Day. Blaine confesses to Kurt that he's in love with someone and asks advice on whether he should sing to them. Kurt says he should, thinking that Blaine means him. Blaine convinces the Warblers to sing at a Gap for his crush, a junior manager there. Kurt has a slumber party with Rachel and Mercedes, confiding in them of the feelings his has and how he made it all up in his head. It completely fails and Kurt is with Blaine when he gets rejected. Blaine says he may have made it all up in his head. The Warblers perform “Silly Love Songs” at Breadstix with most of New Directions looking on. Kurt and Blaine attend a party hosted by Rachel. Blaine gets drunk, but Kurt is not drinking because he's still trying to impress Blaine. During a game of spin the bottle, Rachel and Blaine kiss. During this they both felt something. Kurt thinks it was because they were both drunk, but Blaine is confused and not entirely sure who he is anymore. Blaine and Rachel go on a date, and Kurt helps Rachel clean her basement to find out how it went. Rachel thinks it went well, but Kurt still thinks that Blaine is gay. Rachel decides to prove it by kissing Blaine sober. When she does, Blaine realizes that he is truly gay. Kurt goes to comfort Rachel, but she is happy, and rushes off to write a song.
While preparing Sue approaches Kurt and Blaine at a coffee shop. She tells them that New Directions is going “sexy” for Regionals. Blaine takes this to heart and the Warblers perform “Animal” for their sister school Crawford Country Day. Blaine tells Kurt that his “sexy faces” look like he is having gas pains. Blaine tries to help him, but Kurt fails miserably when he tries to be sexy. Kurt says he knows nothing about sex and Blaine offers to talk to him. The conversation ends when Kurt tells him to leave. Burt approaches Kurt with pamphlets from a free clinic, after having a conversation with Blaine. They have a heart to heart and Kurt reads over his pamphlets. During an impromptu practice/performance of “Misery” Blaine openly flirts with Kurt, but Kurt is not pleased. He thinks Blaine shouldn't be getting all of the solos in the group and admits how jealous he is. At home, he whistles back and forth with Pavarotti, when suddenly the whistling stops. Kurt goes to school in a black uniform and informs the other Warblers that Pavarotti has died, probably a stroke. Kurt sings “Blackbird” for Pavarotti and the rest of the Warblers join in, backing him. During this song, Blaine realizes that he has strong feelings for Kurt. Blaine arranges for the two of them to have a duet at Regionals. When going to practice with Kurt, he finds him making a bedazzled coffin for Pavarotti. Blaine explains his feelings for Kurt, leaving Kurt stunned. Blaine then kisses Kurt and Kurt kisses Blaine. Regionals finally come, with the boys officially together. Kurt tells Blaine that he is nervous, but Blaine tells him to relax and everything will be fine. They perform “Candles” as a duet. Then the whole group backs Blaine as he sings “Raise Your Glass.” Despite a wonderful performance that the crowd loved, New Directions win Regionals and move on to Nationals.
Even though New Directions beat them at Regionals, Kurt and Blaine decide to go to their benefit concert to help them go to New York. They have a run in with Karofsky and Santana, of all people, comes to their rescue. Kurt admits to Blaine that he misses McKinley. He wants to return and so does New Directions, but Blaine is worried about Karofsky. So, Santana gets to him and they form a non-bullying type club to prevent bullies. Kurt and his dad meet with Karofsky and his dad. Kurt talks with Karofsky alone and eventually decides to return to McKinley. Meanwhile, Rachel is considering a nose job. Kurt and other members of the glee club start a flash mob at the mall to “Barbara Streisand” and Rachel eventually decides against a nose job. On Kurt's first day back to McKinley, he is surprised by the Warblers who have come to sing to him. Blaine and Kurt look at each other, but both know that nothing will change and they embrace. Kurt performs “Born this Way” with the rest of the club with a shirt that says “Likes Boys.” On a stakeout Rachel and Finn see Kurt and Sam at a motel room. Rachel automatically thinks that Kurt is cheating on Blaine. Kurt just looks at her and comments on her insanity. The rest of the group eventually finds out that Sam is living at the motel room and is borrowing clothes from Kurt because he can't afford anything. With Prom coming up, Kurt asks Blaine to go with him. Blaine hesitates and then tells Kurt his experience, but he does agree to go. At his house, Kurt models his kilt for his boyfriend, father, and step-brother. Blaine and Burt don't think he should wear it, because it is just asking for trouble. Kurt worked really hard on it, and wears it anyway. On the way to class one day, Kurt and Karofsky talk about him being gay and how he will have to come out sometime. Karofsky is scared of how people will see him. Kurt says that maybe it's not Karofsky keeping the bullying away, maybe people don't care anymore. However at prom, when Kurt is crowned Prom Queen, it is clear that people do care. They just aren't being physical about it. He stands tall though, after a break down in the hallway with Blaine, and gets crowned, then prepares for his dance with the prom King, Karofsky. He tells him that this is the perfect time to come out. Karofsky can't do it and runs off, leaving Kurt standing out there alone. But Blaine steps in and dances with him. Nationals are coming up fast and Jesse St. James has appeared as a consultant for show choirs. Kurt auditions for a solo but is shot down by him. This is overshadowed by the death of Sue's sister, Jean. Finn and Kurt go to her aid and organize a funeral with a Willy Wonka theme. The New Directions sing “Pure Imagination.”
Nationals have arrived and Mr. Schue has instructed the group not to leave the hotel without two hit original songs. Of course no one obeys this. Kurt wakes Rachel up early and they go have breakfast at Tiffany's. Then the pair sneaks into the Gershwin Theater where Wicked is performed. They are given 15 minutes and they sing “For Good” on the stage, with Kurt singing as Glinda. They have a heart to heart about relationships and performing and Rachel seems to make a decision about Finn. The New Directions do not place in the top ten, even though their performance had the entire audience on it's feet. They pack up and head back to Lima. Kurt meets Blaine at the Lima Bean and talks to him about New York. He seems very happy for someone who just lost at Nationals. Kurt tells Blaine that he's had a pretty good year. Blaine then tells the boy “I love you.” Kurt is stunned but manages to respond with an “I love you too.”
Short rp Sample (Preferably as the character you're applying for)
(After the Klaine kiss)
Kurt's mind was in a whirl. He had just come from practicing his duet with Blaine. Well, they were supposed to be practicing, and he supposed in a way, they were practicing. Blaine had just come to Kurt while he was bedazzling Pavarotti's casket. Blaine sat down and proceeded to explain to Kurt his feelings for him. Blaine Anderson liked Kurt Hummel! Not only did he like Kurt, but it was like he liked him all along, but had only just realized it. And if that wasn't enough, Blaine kissed him! The kiss was amazing. Kurt had not been expecting it, but once it happened, Kurt just let it happen and he kissed Blaine back. His mind had gone completely blank. The only thing he was aware of was Blaine's lips against his. Kurt had never experienced this before. The last kiss he had was one forced on him by Dave Karofsky. It had been utterly horrible. It was the complete opposite of the kiss from Blaine.
Even now, Kurt's heart was still pounding even now. The only reason the boys had stopped kissing was because it was time for a full Warblers rehearsal. The two boys walked down the hallway together, hand in hand. He was hand in hand with his boyfriend! Soon they would walk into rehearsal, still hand in hand. He wondered how the other Warblers would react. They had all been really accepting so far. And as far as he could tell, they still would be. Especially since he had noticed some interesting looks coming from other Warblers. In fact, Kurt wouldn't be surprised if some of them slapped their backs and said “About time!” Finally they reached the door. Kurt stole a glance at Blaine's perfect face. ”Ready?” he asked with his hand on the door knob.
